Kylie Minogue played the last show of her “For Me, For You” tour last night in New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom. There was much hype surrounding her first American tour, and rightfully so. From the instant Kylie was lowered to stage on a giant chrome skull singing “Light Years,” to the amazing confetti-d encore performance of “Love At First Sight,” the energy in the venue was palpable. Minogue, who is an Australian pop-icon, has a much smaller fan base stateside. What she lacks in numbers, she makes up in devotion; she has a cult-like following.

I tend to think that smaller venues, such as Hammerstein Ballroom, suit bands better than pop-stars, but the producers of this tour utilized every inch of space available to create an experience that puts to shame any stadium tour. The videographer and graphic designer supplied the audience with a colorful backdrop for Kylie to work her magic. Including components of Kylie’s music videos, different eras of her career and down right creativity, the five large screens suspended above and flanking the stage, told a story and captivated the audience. Helping tell this story were an array of costume changes and some fantastically talented dancers.

The set-list, which was the same for the entire tour, included some of Kylie’s best known, chart-topping hits. Since last night was the tour finale, during the encore, she added, “I Could Be So Lucky,” which was her first worldwide number one hit, from the 1987 album, Kylie.
