3. “2 Become 1”
Two plus one is three. “2 Become 1,” was released as the Spice Girls’ third single on 16 December 1996, becoming the group’s first Number One Christmas single (“Too Much” and “Goodbye” would follow suit consecutively). The video was shot well in advance on 22 November 1996 at Old Compton Street Studios in London, entirely against a green screen.
The video was shot in double-time, to achieve the juxtaposition of the girls against the fast-paced backdrop, which was added during the edit. Scenes from New York were used, and personally, I think that choice was wonderful. Nothing plays backdrop to a love story better than New York.
Victoria Beckham on the video: “I think ‘2 Become 1’ is my favorite video. […] It was really different to the other videos–shot entirely in the studio, with high technology and loads of effects. It was really weird having to sing passionately into the camera, I was feeling a right mug in front of all those people singing ‘wanna make love to ya baby’.”
This is one of my favorite videos of theirs, although I never understood the doe running around at the end.
