Sugar and Spice and everything nice… Round 12:

The third and final, consecutive Christmas #1 for the Spice Girls was Goodbye in 1998. Mel B. and Victoria are heavily pregnant. Melanie C. is heavily anorexic and to be quite frank, really frightening to watch. Contrary to popular interpretation, mostly due to the timing of it’s release, the song is not, in fact, about Geri’s departure from the group. Furthermore, Halliwell penned most of the lyrics, but after she left, her name was taken out of the writing credits. Of the three singles released without Halliwell, this is the only one that she sang during the Return of the Spice Girls tour. This is one of the most beautifully written Spice Girls songs, both lyrically and melodically.

Sugar and Spice and everything nice… Round 8:

The Spice Girls’ second, consecutive Christmas #1 came in 1997 with Too Much, the second single released from “Spice World.” This performance from “Top of the Pops (TOTP)” comes from the penultimate week in December, when the song was still only in the number two slot. The opening sequence of the Spice Girls’ motion picture, “Spice World,” features the girls performing the song on “TOTP,” similarly to this.

To take a page out of SimTilver’s book, I will be re-creating his “Your Daily Céline!” with posts of Spice Girls videos. The first video in the series is their live performance of “2 Become 1” on the British television show, Strictly Come Dancing, during the Return of the Spice Girls Tour in December 2007. The song was originally released as the third single from their debut album, Spice, and it achieved the highly coveted “Christmas #1” slot in 1996.
