The Long Island Rail Road is the only commuter rail operator present on Long Island. There are no competitors, and if there were, the MTA would probably absorb that entity under their umbrella.
By definition, the LIRR is a monopoly. Consumers must use their service. They are subjected to their horrendous and unreliable service. They must pay their outrageous fares, which have recently increased.
Their management, headed by Helena Williams, is a posse of incompetent clowns. There are anti-trust laws in the United States, right? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Clearly something needs to be done. I don’t know how people who have commuted for 30+ years do it. I’ve only been commuting into the city via the LIRR for three years and I’m over it.

Helena Williams, president of the #LIRR is a prostitute. If you’re so “sorry” then perhaps you shouldn’t charge the fare until service is restored to “normal.” “Normal” meaning service being delayed only 20-30 minutes.
Helena: you claim that “you know” yesterday’s commute was difficult. Tell me, did you take your filthy, disgusting, sorry excuse of a rail road yesterday? Do you get sub-par, unfriendly service from the employees that are paid WAY to much to punch a ticket? Do you have to pay ridiculous fares for service that does not meet the quality one would expect with these out of control fares? I’m willing to bet the answer to all of these questions is no, and for that you are a prostitute.
