This is the ad that was placed in The Stage, circa March 1994, in which one Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Michelle Stephenson would answer, forming the all-girl pop group, Touch. Stephenson would later be replaced by Emma Bunton, creating the Spice Girls. Nearly 17 years later, Viva Forever, the West End musical inspired by the Spice Girls music, written by Jennifer Saunders and produced by Judy Craymer, focuses on the idea of fame and how one achieves it.
In light of the fantastic news that Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will reprise their roles as Eddy and Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous, please enjoy this sketch from the 2005 Comic Relief Special co-starring Emma Bunton!
5. Who Do You Think You Are
Released as the fourth single from their debuet album, Spice, as a double A-side with “Mama,” “Who Do You Think You Are” was also the official single for Comic Relief’s 1997” Red Nose Day.

In addition to this, the official version, an alternate was shot as well. In the “Comic Relief Version,” as it is called, the Spice Girls are joined by ficitional girl group, The Sugar Lumps, whose lineup consists of: Jennifer Saunders, Kathy Burke, Lulu, Dawn French and Llewella Gideon. Each of the comediennes impersonated a Spice Girl.
Both versions of the video were shot in a pub just north of London in February 1997 and were directed by Gregg Masuak. Melanie C. remembers the day of the shoot: “We shot the video for ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ in a really mad club—a real dive. The toilets were horrible and we had to have our make-up done in a Winnebago. The vibe was excellent, though—I think it was my favourite video because it was such good fun. I felt like a proper pop star. […] It was just how you imagine it when you’re young.”
As this song was never released as a single Stateside, it wasn’t until after the Spice Frenzy of the late 1990’s was over that I discovered this video. It’s definitely pretty cheezy, but as asserted by Melanie C., it was all about the fun.
Sweetie dahling, I CAN’T WAIT!!!
Apparently, Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell has been seen toting around a picture of her former band of gal pals. Although the Spice Girls have not confirmed any future projects, (other than Viva Forever, the West End musical being produced by Judy Craymer and written by Jennifer Saunders, which is to be based on the Girls’ music catalog), the rumor mill is always churning.
Everything from a new album to a comeback performance at the 2012 Olympics, to be hosted in London, have been published in the tabloids. One report even suggested that Halliwell is planning on producing her own girl band, (she is rumored to be the new judge on “X-Factor”…). Nevertheless, it does seem rather interesting that Ginge is carrying around that picture. She must be feeling nostalgic. And to be honest, so am I. Reunion please!!!
Words cannot express my excitement.
I knew about this last week, but it’s so exciting to see it being reported by Broadway World!
