This morning, while riding the 7 Train, or as I call it: The Orient(al) Express, I noticed the above gentleman was using his first generation iPhone. I found this to be interesting because the Edge network is absolutely terrible and by now, most people have upgraded to a newer version of the phone.
Don’t, get me wrong — I loved my first generation iPhone. So much, in fact, that when the touch screen stopped working after two years of use, I held a mock funeral for it. No really. See for yourself. The craftsmanship is unsurpassed by any of the descendants, except for the iPhone4, perhaps.
Now I’m stuck with the 3G, which is a slow piece of garbage. I refuse to upgrade until the the iPhone is actually on a 4G network. (Despite the bogus claims of Verizon and AT&T, neither company really operates a 4G network). The 3G and 3GS lose much of the high-quality aesthetics of their predecessor and are basically chintzy pieces of plastic shit.
Anyway, I digress… this isn’t a discussion about the actual iPhone, what I’m getting at, is has the original iPhone become somewhat of a vintage accessory? In the same vein of a girl who carries around her mother’s Chanel bag from the 1970’s, is it more prestigious to carry around the vintage pieces? Or have the limitations of technology made it impossible for electronic devices to become vintage — instead, they are given the label “obsolete.”
You don’t see anyone walking around with a “Zack Morris” cell phone anymore. Maybe it’s because that phone was so cumbersome, but most likely it’s because that technology doesn’t even work anymore.
I really like the idea of using a “vintage” iPhone, but I have a feeling that the guy on the subway is going to need to upgrade soon. After all, how much longer does the Edge network actually have?
